Local Hero - Tall Timber

Local Hero - Tall Timber

Who doesn’t love a good breakfast? Seems everyone in Prahran does and one place they seek out is Tall timber. This popular Prahran haunt serves up some great coffee and equally good food to a clearly parochial crowd and when the weather is with you Tall Timber's rear courtyard is an amazing place to find yourself for a beautiful weekend breakfast slash brunch – not the Dubai kind.

This place gets super busy and doesn’t take long for courtyard to fill up with punters eagerly awaiting their grub. Thankfully its an undercover area because being in Melbourne it could start raining at any moment. It’s a nice space with a central garden that is surrounded by a continuous bench table forms a squared communal seating area that works really well.

The inside of the building proper features all of the elements that you would expect from a Melbourne Café: white walls, scuffed concrete floors and Edison lights. It’s pretty standard stuff but still works nicely with its predominately neutral palette creating a cottage type feel to this interior space.

There are few distinct features such as the wall mounted Butcher Paper rolls that feature the day’s promotions and business hours, while at the front of the café, a tiny bench and bay window arrangement offers the perfect vantage spot for people watching and there are plenty of people to watch as this is one busy place on the weekend. You can expect to wait anywhere between 20 minutes to half an hour to get a table.

The menu offers a range contemporary morning classics including the Eggs Benedict, Smashed Avocado and the Shakshuka. Having previously indulged in the Smashed Avo, this visit was all about the Eggs Benedict (AED 55) which promises perfect poached eggs combined with a ham hock terrine and apple cider hollandaise. It didn’t disappoint.

The acidity of the apple cut through the hollandaise sauce perfectly while the pulled pork was smokey, juicy and flavorsome and a great compliment to the expertly poached eggs. Apple and pork is a classic flavor combination and Tall Timber translates this well into a hearty breakfast dish.

Overall, Tall Timber executes brilliant breakfasts with confidence and is an absolute local hero of Prahran for a morning bite.
