Shek Tong Tsui Market Hong Kong

Shek Tong Tsui Market Hong Kong

The Shek Tong Tsui Market sits in a vibrant district between Kennedy Town and Sai Ying Pun and has a whole lot of character. The area is an interesting mix of old and new that typifies what we love about Hong Kong. Just near by is Hotel Jen, along with a bunch of cool eateries and cafes, all of which can be accessed by train and getting off at the HKU Station.

You may not know this but Shek Tong Tsui was actually a licensed red-light district back in the early 1900’s which reputedly had over 500 brothels in operation. While those days are long gone, what you can expect to see now is now a rapidly growing hot spot for trendy eateries and of course the market itself.

The minute you enter the place, you’re stuck by the old school nature of it and how busy it is. There’s a lot going on with meat, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables all changing rapidly hands and customers and stall owners negotiate and make their exchanges.

The market is spread across four levels with the cooked food market and restaurants at the top and the fruit and veg at the bottom which is street level. In the middle you have the wet market which is where you’ll find all the meat and fish. These areas are bathed in an eerie red light which adds to scene.
